Autism Support Seminar Series at MATC
Happy fall!
I hope everyone has had a good beginning to a new school year. As parents of kids with disabilities, we know that we always need to be looking out for learning opportunities to help us – and our school teams – support our kids.
We’ve already posted about the educational seminars offered by the Rehabilitation Centre for Children. MATC in Winnipeg also offers excellent and economical seminars for both parents and educators. Below is their lineup for this year.
The registration for MATC seminars is completed on Eventbrite and is open for registration. You can attend in person, or if that isn’t convenient MATC offers the option of participating via Tandberg or Go To Meeting. If you are interested in the off-site option please contact Erika Wainwright, Autism Support Teacher (WSD/MATC) at 204-958-6264. You can also contact her if you have any other questions.
Building Connections (Parents & Caregivers)
This presentation is tailored for caregivers (parents, respite, foster parents, grandparents, etc.) working with children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It highlights understanding ASD from a developmental and core deficits perspective; and provides a relationship-based framework for increasing dynamic thinking and engagement.
In this workshop, caregivers :
• learn how to use relationships meaningfully to guide acquisition skills required to learn, socialize, and function in daily activities
• learn how to consider sensory preferences when enabling participation in everyday occupations
• learn how to scaffold engagement and activities to encourage exploration and interactions
• build a “toolbox” of skills and strategies to guide children in their exploration of the world, and enable the child’s ability to self-regulate, think, learn, and problem solve.

Triple S – “Scaffolding Student Success”
This workshop is tailored for school support teams to equip them with guiding frameworks to scaffold school engagement and performance of students struggling in the classroom.
Participants will:
• Review self-regulation and considerations/barriers to engagement
• Become familiar with guiding frameworks to scaffold success
• Develop and work through “Plan A-B-C” tool to familiarize application
Participants are encouraged to attend as school teams (e.g. administrators, clinicians, resource, classroom, educational assistants) and to select one student profile to develop supports for during the workshop. Participants will be encouraged to review pre-workshop resources to prepare for afternoon sections.

Sexuality and Self-Care Skills
This presentation will provide information, strategies, and ideas regarding issues that affect adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder relating to sexuality, puberty, and hygiene.
Topics will include:
• Understanding the development of sexuality in kids/teens with ASD
• Onset of Puberty
• Hygiene
• Language use
• Contraceptives
• Strategies to support
